Functional Movement Screening
The Functional Movement Screen captures fundamental movements, motor control within movement patterns and competence of basic movements uncomplicated by specific skills. The FMS is comprised of various movement tests, where the client is placed in positions that require balance, mobility and competent stabilizing skills. The movement patterns used, give observable weaknesses, imbalances, asymmetries and limitations. Many people are able to perform a wide range of activities, unaware they have a compensating pattern. This is where the FMS comes in, it highlights where people have dysfunction or pain in a certain movement pattern. Especially when they are required to perform the move correctly with no compensations. Those that score poorly on the screen are using compensatory movement patterns during regular activity. If there compensations continue, sub-optimal movement patterns are reinforced, leading to poor biomechanics and possibly contributing to a future injury.
In a nut shell, I use the FMS to limit injuries in sport by analysing specific movements and determining what is causing the limitation. Through prescriptive correctional programming, I correct the problem and significantly reduce the risk of injury. The FMS screen will also fill a void after an injury, for example an injury to the knee. Once the injury has healed, the person is ready to return to sport. They would have compensated for many months on the other side of the body. Putting the other knee at risk, by screening for compensating patterns we can reduce the risk of injury to the other knee and possibly the ankle and hip. I feel that this screen is invaluable to everyone undertaking sport or even regular activity especially after an injury.
